If the death occurs at home, telephone the deceased's GP. Contact a qualified Funeral Director who will then be able to advise you on what steps to take. These may include:

REGISTRATION OF DEATH

The death will need to be registered in the registrars office for the area in which the death has occured. The following information and documents are required:

  • Medical certificate of cause of death (issued by Hospital or GP if death occurs at home)
  • Medical card of deceased (it may also be helpful to have the deceased's Birth Certificate and Marriage Certificate available for information)
  • Full name of deceased
  • Date of birth
  • Place of birth
  • Occupation
  • Date of birth of surviving partner if applicable
  • Type of funeral arranged
  • Maiden name if applicable
  • Husband's/Wife's full name if applicable
  • Husband's/Wife's last known occupation if applicable
  • Copies of the entry of death if required are obtainable from the registrar upon payment of the necessary fee

The registrar will issue you with:

  • A green certificate of Burial or Cremation which must be delivered to the Funeral Director as soon as possible prior to the funeral taking place
  • A white certificate of registration of death, which should be completed and forwarded together with the deceased's pension benefit book, to the local Department of Social Security

CORONER'S PROCEDURE

There are occasions when it is necessary for H. M. Coroner to investigate any sudden or unexpected death. The Coroner and his Officers are working in your interest and will keep you informed of their progress. You can contact a Funeral Director to discuss making funeral arrangements as soon as you feel ready to do so. The Coroner will liase with the Funeral Director to ensure that ample time is allowed for the Coroner’s enquiries to be completed in order for the funeral to proceed. We will be pleased to advise you further on Coroner’s procedure should you require information.


WHEN DEATH TAKES PLACE ABROAD

You will want to ensure that all of the arrangements are taken care of properly, and to be kept informed of all developments. As licensed Funeral Directors we have extensive experience of the procedures involved when dealing with repatriation, and can make all of the arrangements necessary to bring the deceased person safely back to England.

We would advise you to make contact with us as soon as possible in order to minimise any delay, and pass on to us the details regarding the person who has died.
We are also able to arrange the repatriation of a person who has died in England to any other country in the world, and will be pleased to provide you with more information.


PEOPLE YOU WILL NEED TO CONTACT OR NOTIFY

  • Family, friends and relatives - remember those living abroad may wish to come to the funeral.
  • The deceased’s employers.
  • D.S.S. you will need to return any Pension or Benefit books together with the Certificate issued bythe Registrar.
  • Bank, Insurance company and Building societies.
  • Social services - meals on wheels, home help and medical loan equipment ( wheel chairs )
  • Solicitor, Accountant and Financial Advisor.
  • Inland Revenue.
  • Driving licence, car insurance, change ownership on registration documents.
  • Hospital - out patient appointments, community nurse.
  • Council or landlord of rented accommodation.
  • Gas/Electricity/Water company if property will be un-occupied.
  • Post office to redirect mail.
  • Passport office - to cancel or change from duel to single.
  • Tradesmen - newsagent, milkman etc.
  • Television licence.
  • Return library books.
  • Clubs that the deceased belonged to - such as Rotary, Women’s Institute or Bowl’s club.
